CREATE your Own Reference Book!
Developing an easy-to-use personal reference guide of your watercolours is always a good idea, and our 238 Try-It Colour Sheet is a great way to get started!
Cut the 238 Try-It Colour Sheet into individual reference tabs so that each of the 238 watercolour dots are on their own rectangle. Be sure to preserve the information (watercolour name, series number, code number, and colour information) printed on the paper for each colour. Using sheets of watercolour paper or pages in a Watercolour Journal, staple each reference rectangle onto a page.
In our example, we used 8.5" x 11 sheets and punched holes so that they could be inserted into a binder later. Dip your brush into water, then onto the watercolour dot on the stapled Reference rectangle. Take up the pigment and paint it out on your Reference Book page. Brush out the released pigment on the paper, experimenting with pigment density and transparency/granulation. You can then write in notes about the colour, such as Tips and Tricks about Wet onto Wet/Dry Paper Techniques. Create Mixing References too - combinations that you want to remember and use later. Watch the video demo for more information. (demo shows 66 dot try-it card)

Write a reviewand I am so glad that I did try it.I found that some of the pigments that I thought I may like I didn't, some that looked very different were in fact very similar to other manufacturers, but also many real surprises. The Quinacridone range is eyepopping, and some of the transparent earths are stunning. I use Verona Gold Ochre now instead of yellow ochre, ande Monte Amiata Nat Sienna instead of raw sienna. They are lovely, as is Quinacridone Sienna which is quite stunning. The Duochrome and Iridescent paints are all fantastic for shimmery glazing effects and affordable at series 1, so why not have a go at that card if you dont fancy this one. I would recommend using a synthetic brush or mixed brush as the dots in some colours need a bit of 'poke' to get them going. I recommend it.
Lots of very unusual as well as more mainstream pigments - an excellent way to try out Daniel Smith paints as they only come in big tubes which can be quite an expensive way to try a new colour and end up not liking it. Some of the blobs are bigger than others as it is a hand made product and I suppose they can be more generous with the cheaper pigments but there is enough to paint a square in varying dilutions and still have enough to use once or twice in a small painting. I have discovered quite a few interesting mixes which I wouldn't have tried and it is fabulous for flower painting. I am ordering some more of my favourite colours.
A great way to try the whole range of Daniel Smith colours. There are so many available I didn't know where to start- I wanted them all! So being able to try them using this colour card is brilliant. Some of the shades I was attracted to I actually didn't like so much when I tried them, and likewise I found some brilliant new colours I would never have chosen otherwise. The amount of paint on the dots is sufficient enough to get a good idea of the shade and working properties of each colour. In fact I have used them as accents on smaller paintings to give myself a bit of variety!
