Description

Botanical Watercolours Through the Seasons by Sandrine Maugy is a comprehensive all-year round guide to painting flowers and plants, following the rhythm of nature through the year.

Sandrine begins this book by running through her ethically-sourced materials and tools, her workspace and an introduction to the key techniques she uses in her botanical watercolours. She also covers colour theory in relation to botanica subjects, as well as colour bias and the key to creating realistic shadows without falling back on grey.

Each of the main chapters in this title focuses on a season, and includes instructions for painting its plants. Explore papery bulbs in spring and jewel-like berries in winter - all shown alongside examples of the author’s stunning artwork. There are three step-by-step tutorials within each chapter - beginning with beginner level and progressing to more advanced techniques. Subjects of the tutorials range from bold spring daffodils, delicate summer sweet peas, through to whimsical autumn ginkgo biloba leaves, and finishing with a striking holly star composition to close the winter chapter.

A foreword written by Tom Brown (Head Gardener at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation) praises Sandrine’s expertise and tuition. Readers have the option to work through the exercises season to season, or to pick and choose from their favourite flowers. All Sandrine’s materials are ethically sourced - from sustainable paper and cruelty-free brushes to vegan paints.
