Includes step-by-step projects to build your confidence in the medium.
Hints, tips and advice straight from established artist Sarah Wimperis.
Water-Mixable Oils by Sarah Wimperis is the perfect guide for artists looking to test out water-mixable oils. Through her expert instruction, Sarah will guide you step by step to become a master in the medium.
In this book you’ll be introduced to the beauty of watermixable oils and see how they match the rich pigmentation, buttery consistency and long drying times of your favourite oil paints. Sarah begins with a brief overview of the medium, explaining exactly what water-mixable oils are. Following the introduction, Sarah covers the materials you’ll need as well as brush care and paint storage. She also introduces basic colou palettes as well as exploring paint mixing and surface preparation.
There are multiple projects throughout the book that will help you build your confidence with the medium. The first explores colour, explaining how you can use colour to paint like Vincent Van Gogh. Five longer projects touch on the themes of abstraction, still life, landscapes, buildings and working from a photograph. All of which draw on the rich qualities of these paints. Each project includes a list of the materials you’ll need as well as the artist’s own top tips and skills. The book is full of useful anecdotes and words of wisdom Sarah has gained from her years of experience.
The final chapter of the book covers how to best store and transport your finished paintings (especialy while the paint is still tacky!) as well as how to frame your paintings.

Sarah Wimperis is a professional artist who paints en plein-air in oils and watercolour. Her larger paintings are often completed using plein-air reference either at home in her studio or on her travels in her mobile studio.
Sarah has exhibited many times with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, in the Discerning Eye exhibition and with the Royal Society of British Artists. She was the only English artist who worked on Loving Vincent the world's first fully hand-painted feature film about the artist Vincent van Gogh and his paintings. Sarah also provided the artists' perspective for the audio guide for the Tate Britain exhibition, 'Van Gogh and Britain'.
Sarah runs regular workshops and gives talks and demos; she is also an established illustrator and author. She has worked for the BBC on the children's storytelling series Jackanory; with the National Trust; and many other organizations in the UK and worldwide.
