The Derwent Onyx pencil is made from smooth dark graphite and allows you to instantly create dense rich jet-black tones. The Derwent Onyx pencil is equally good for quick expressive sketches as well as detailed technical and architectural drawings. If you require really deep tones these can be built up by applying increased pressure. Less pressure will achieve lighter tones ideal for more precise work. It is available in two tones, Medium and Dark.
Derwent Onyx Pencils are rated 8 on the Blue Wool Lightfastness Scale. Both grades of pencil contain animal fat in the wax blend. View the Derwent Onyx Pencil Colour Chart for more information.

Write a review..with my last review. I've been using these on a couple of portraits and while I still maintain that the Graphic 8 & 9b are better I'll refine that to "over an area". These pencils come into their own in keeping a usable point making them excellent for dark detail work and texture such as hair & fur. A definite worthwhile addition to your pencil collection if you like details.
I bought the dark version based on the description but in a side by side comparison it doesn't live up to this. It certainly feels harder than either an 8B or 9B Graphic and a side by side test showed more pressure is required to get anywhere near the darkness easily achievable with either of the Graphics. The round body is comfortable though, it sharpens to a nice point and is certainly smooth. Not a bad pencil but in my experience a little disappointing given the description.
now I want the box of 25 with the free storage tin
