The Bible Of Illuminated Letters by Margaret Morgan is a treasury of decorative calligraphy that includes instructions on how to recreate historical alphabets including Celtic, Gothic and Romanesque lettering.
Illumination is the traditional art of creating elaborate, decorative lettering and initials. It reached its peak in the monasteries of Medieval Europe, where many practiced the skill with artistry. Typically embellished with gold leaf, the lettering reflected light, almost as if they were 'illuminated.
A new generation of calligraphers are taking up this skill. The Bible of Illuminated Letters presents step-by-step instructions so you can recreate your own alphabets from six historical periods. Diagrams are included for both upper and lower case, along with design ideas for borders and decorations. There are also instructions for gilding. Each section introduced ways in which you can adapt the alphabets to create your own personal lettering.
