Brings out colour brilliance of oil paints, superb for my glazing technique, ideal for fine detail works & works well as my preferred slow drying medium.
I bought this product specifically to deal with 'oiling out' problems that my painting technique, layers of thin paint, is prone to. In the past I used linseed oil, allowed this to dry thoroughly before applying a satin varnish. A process that worked very well, leaving the painting looking rich, even and important to me little obvious signs that the painting had been varnished. I hate gloss varnish. I was encouraged to try this product by its resistance to yellowing. However this medium wouldn't dry. I applied a very thin coat and several days later it remained very sticky, tacky. I managed to remove it with white spirit, this proved difficult and laborious but I got there in the end. The paintings are not damaged thank goodness as I allow them to stand for at least a year before varnishing. I shall go back to the tried and tested.
We contacted Winsor & Newton technical department about this issue and they said: "This medium is designed to be mixed into colour, however, it can be used for oiling out. Applying a layer over the painting is where the problem lies. A very small amount of medium should be applied onto a lint free cloth—sparingly, and worked into sunken areas in gentle circular motions. Mediums or oils should never be applied as a layer over oil colour."
