Caran d'Ache Neopastel Oil Pastels have a soft, velvety texture and a matte finish. They are available in a range of 96 colours, each made with artist quality pigments that deliver exceptional coverage. Each colour in the range is rated very good for lightfastness - with the majority rated excellent with three stars. Their firm texture makes them suitable for all kinds of applications. Mix them easily with your fingers or a blending stump, dilute with turpentine to create glazes or create batik effects on paper.
Caran d'Ache have been making professional quality pastels since 1952, and the Neopastel in particular was created to meet the demands of professional pastel artists. These pastels have excellent thermal stability and will not powder or dry out. They high, extrafine pigment content and inert oil ensure the drawing layer does not oxidise. Highly versatile, use the edge, the bevelled cut or the flat side of the pastel to lay down brilliant colour.
Neopastel Oil Pastels have a round profile and each pastel measures approximately 10 mm x 68 mm. Each pastel has a removable paper covering including the colour identification number and lightfastness. Conforms to ASTM D4236.
Caran d'Ache Neopastel Oil Pastels will adhere to almost all supports - including paper, colouredpaper, tracing paper, velvet, canvas, wood, glass and leather - and can also be used on top of dried coats of ink, acrylic and both water-soluble or traditional oil paints. The texture and colour of the support you choose will determine the appearance of your finished painting.
Neopastel can be used as a standalone medium or combined with other paints, inks, pencils ad pastels for mixed media application. Their soft, velvety texture makes it easy to mix colours with your fingers, a blending stump, cotton bud or colourless blender. As Neopastels are hydrophobic, they can be used with wash techniques. They are also oleophilic, and can be used with turpentine to creat painterly effects. To keep pastels clean when mixing colours wipe them regularly with a cotton cloth.
Neopastels are a non-siccative oil pastel, which means that they do not dry. Your work can be preserved with a fixative, but for the best protection it is advised to frame your artwork under glass with a mat to ensure that your art doesn't come into contact with the glass.

Write a reviewI really like these oil pastels. I usually use Senellier but I couldn't buy individually and wanted a few colours without purchasing a whole box, so Ken Bromley recommended these. They are harder than Sennelier but I actually prefer that for certain effects. So I now use a combination of both brands and they work well together. I like that I can buy the colours I need.
I use these pastels to supplement my other pastels. Not as creamy as Sennelier but still very good and they have a good selection of colours.
