Best water-soluble graphite pencils
I have recently come across water-soluble graphite pencils which are great for tonal sketches preparatory for watercolour paintings - David Webb suggested these in a course I went on. I have tried three different brands and have to say that the Caran d'Ache are by far the best I have tried, because they are more soluble (ie more pigment flows out when water applied) and they can be sharpened to a smaller point that the other ones I have used. Really superior product.

They appear to be just fine, but I ask myself, are they any better than Faber-Castell Graphite Aquarelle, which I also have used! The Caran D'Ache are certainly more expensive. Time will tell!

I will definitely be buying a second set of these as a backup in case I lose them, or need another pencil case for a different purpose! By far the best I've used. There's a real, noticeable difference between the three grades, and they blend beautifully when water is added, removing any trace of actual pencil strokes. Fantastic addition to my sketch kit.
